Today I found out why Dick is short for Richard. People also used to like to use rhyming names; thus, someone who was nicknamed Rich might further be nicknamed Hitch. Normally means tail but in slang means penis. But he thought he was pretty funny, and so we did too, him being our dad and all. In the Western part of Europe being a Catholic, boys are called Dirk.
